Using Less Energy Equals More Internet
New IPv6 Forum Working Group Focused on Reducing Global Energy Use by Twenty Five Percent Sacramento, CA; August 19, 2008 – The IPv6 Forum is pleased to announce an innovative new global working group. A working group incubated in cooperation with the IPv6 Forum, and the California IPv6 Task Force, the Green Protocol Working Group was formed to promote global collaboration and exchange of information pertaining to the New Internet based on IPv6 technologies in the interest of reducing the cost of resources needed to efficiently manage the building environment. Over 30 percent of the total consumption of power is consumed by buildings around the world. By using intelligent new technologies that leverage the usefulness of the New Internet based on IPv6 the working group will demonstrate how significant changes can be made in the way buildings are designed, developed, and controlled. Representatives associated with governments and non-governmental organizations from around the world like the U.S. Federal Government, China, United Nations, and the State of California have joined the group to help foster its objectives. Individuals from large private sector companies such as HP, Bechtel and Google provide the working group with resources and global intelligence. To provide insight into leading edge, state-of-the-art New Internet technologies individuals from various consulting, technology start-up and academic organizations are now a part of the working group as well. The group has identified five high profile buildings, three in San Francisco, California, one in Geneva, Switzerland, and one in Sacramento, California that it will use to apply emerging New Internet technologies and use as test control buildings to demonstrate the potential savings in power consumption and other resources. Green Protocol Working Group founding member, John Archdeacon with the U.S. General Services Administration noted, “Technology through the implementation of the New Internet based on IPv6 may contribute to the efficient management of our energy and environmental resources. We have deployed our commitments, breadth and intensity in other achievements such as the Manhattan Projects and Apollo moon mission. Our mission should be to establish procedures, standardizations and green product development in harnessing the energy and resources needed to function in our homes and business environment.” “Is it possible that the world could save approximately $2.5 trillion dollars annually by consuming less power thanks to the intelligent use of networked sensors and other emerging New Internet technologies?” Geof Lambert, Chair, Green Protocol Working Group asks, “If you look at the fact that global consumption of power is equal to approximately 500 quadrillion BTU’s of energy, I think it is possible, and I believe the money saved could be better used on various humanitarian, greater good projects around the world such as getting the Internet in the hands of everybody, not just the fortunate few 15% who have it now.” ABOUT THE IPv6 FORUM: The IPv6 Forum is a world-wide consortium of leading Internet service vendors, National Research & Education Networks (NRENs) and international ISPs, with a clear mission to promote IPv6 by improving market and user awareness, creating a quality and secure New Internet based on IPv6 and allowing world-wide equitable access to knowledge and technology. The key focus of the IPv6 Forum today is to provide technical guidance for the deployment of IPv6. IPv6 Summits are organized by the IPv6 Forum and staged in various locations around the world to provide industry and market with the best available information on this rapidly advancing technology.
